Why Do Cats Purr?

If you love cats, their purr is probably one of the most soothing voices in the world for you. Purring from cat is like the essence of satisfaction, but it sounds weird and odd. How does the cat continuously emit a perfect vibration for a few minutes? After decades of research, no one can find out exactly why. But here are some things that we can be sure about.

When the cat is sleeping next to you or is intimate with you, it can often be heard that it emits a continuous purring sound. Most people mistakenly believe that this is the purr cat made while sleeping. In fact, the purring sound is the sound a cat made when its false vocal cords vibrate.

From a medical point of view, the skeleton of the cat’s throat is composed of thyroid cartilage and cricoid cartilage. The laryngeal cavity is divided into three parts, the upper part is the laryngeal vestibule and the trailing edge is the false vocal cord. The cavity between the false vocal cord and the true vocal cord is the second part of the laryngeal cavity. The third part is the cavity between the vocal cords and the cartilage ring, which is very narrow.

A cat’s purr is a sound made by the resonance of laryngeal cavity when the false vocal cords vibrate. In fact, when cats are snoring, they do not fall asleep. Cats do not snore when they are playing, feel nervous and really fall asleep.Only when cats are satisfied, or when they feel relaxed and happy in owner’s arms, will they make a brisk purring sound.

At this point, adult cats and Persian cats are more prominent, while kittens rarely snore. Persian cats snore because of their short nasal passages. Adult cats purr because they are more appreciative of enjoying their lives and understanding humans’ caresses and relatives. Therefore, the most typical explanation for the purr sound is that it is a manifestation of happiness and satisfaction. But cats also purr for many other reasons.

Leslie A. Lyons, an assistant professor at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis, explains that: “Cats often purr while under duress, such as during a visit to the veterinarian or when recovering from injury. Thus, not all purring cats appear to be content or pleased with their current circumstances.”

In fact, we don’t know why cats make a “purr” sound, but it seems obvious that this sound has multiple effects. Paul Leyhausen, a renowned animal behaviorist who has spent decades studying cats, said that purr is a way for cats to communicate with each other to show that they are not malicious. A recent study found that when a cat needs people to feed it, it emits a special “purr” sound (of course, it often makes a “purr” sound during eating).

Maybe actually the cat purred is not because it was happy, but just consoling itself with the fact that it had to be touched for the 50,000th time on the head by these active people.

In addition, if the cat keeps snoring regardless of the circumstances, it may be a respiratory infection, and don’t be careless about this.

Help Dogs Overcome the Fear of the Independence Day Fireworks 2018

The July, 4th is US Independence Day, which is one of America’s principal legal holiday. People always enjoy themselves that day, however, dogs are under the most stress on this day. Endless fireworks displays may drive them crazy, and even make them fled in disorder and are nowhere to be found. Whether the plan is to go out to view some fireworks or host your own Fourth of July party, it’s important to remember to keep your furry friends safe during the holiday. Here are some simple tips to share with dog lovers.

First, try to stay with the dogs, touch them, and make them calm down. If you have to go out, remember to put them in a safe room, close the doors and windows, and turn on the TV to buffer the sound of fireworks.

Playing music is also a practical way to make dogs calm down. It is most effective to start playing the music before the fireworks displays begin, because the dog can feel calm and relaxed when the music is playing. It is able to connect music with calm emotions. Therefore, the music should be played in a few hours before fireworks begin, and continued to play until fireworks finished. Music doesn’t need to be loud, and it has been proven to be effective in stabilizing the dog’s nervous system.

Give the dog a place to stay indoors. Dogs can’t talk to you how they are afraid of loud noises, and they usually choose a small space to settle down. The cage will be a good choice if your dog feels safe in it.

Close the window and draw the curtains if possible. Cover the cage and dim the light are both helpful to pacify dogs. Shifting visual stimuli is a good way to stabilize dogs.

Make sure your dog has a positioning chip or wears an identification tag, and make sure the contact information above is up to date.

In addition, it is best to train the dog to know the way home.

How Much Do You Know About Dog Blood Groups?

Blood types, or blood groups are determined by specific antigens found on the surface of erythrocytes. In humans, there is the ABO system of blood types, whereas dogs have a variety of different blood types. Knowledge of blood types in the different species is important as transfusion of incompatible blood can result in severe hemolytic transfusion reactions and even death, in some instances.

(blue: blood donors red: blood recipients o: can transfuse x: can not transfuse)

Dog has 13 blood types which are designated by the acronym DEA (dog erythrocyte antigen) and a number (DEA1, DEA2, DEA3 to DEA12). Other than DEA blood types, Dal is another blood type commonly known in dogs.

DEA1 has two subtypes: DEA1.1 and DEA1.2. DEA 1.1 positive is the most common dog blood type, and dogs with this type are considered universal recipients, that is, they can receive blood of any type without expectation of a life-threatening hemolytic transfusion reaction. Dogs that are DEA1.1 negative are universal donors.

Blood from DEA1.1 positive dogs should never be transfused into DEA1.1 negative dogs. If it is the dog’s first transfusion the red cells transfused will have a shortened life due to the formation of alloantibodies to the cells themselves and the animal will forever be sensitized to DEA1.1 positive blood. If it is a second such transfusion, life-threatening conditions will follow within hours.

In other words, the immune system of DEA1.1 negative dogs recognizes DEA1.1 as a foreign substance and so attacks it. This can lead to severe transfusion reactions if a DEA1.1 negative dog is given blood from a DEA1.1 positive donor.

Just like in most illnesses, the immune system takes longer to react the first time it encounters something and so there is unlikely to be an immediate problem if a dog receives a mismatched blood transfusion the first time.

In addition, these alloantibodies will be present in a female dog’s colostrum and adversely affect the health of DEA1.1 negative puppies.

DEA4 and DEA6 appear on the red blood cells of about 98% of dogs. Dogs with only DEA4 or DEA6 can thus serve as blood donors for the majority of the canine population.

I Can’t Stand To Have Only One “Take Your Dog To Work Day” Every Year, So I…

I can’t stand having only one “TYDTWDay” every year, so I…. want to share funny stories that day with you 🙂

Only I have a dog among all my colleagues, I am really the winner in life!

Dress your dog in a suit and let them experience the life of office workers!

I feel nervous because it is the first time for me to be a deliverer.

Taking dogs to the meeting and even boring meeting will be fun.

Let me see which one is better.

I don’t know what he is laughing at… emmm, so I laugh with him.

For me, going to work is just moving to another place to sleep.

Dog owner: I feel the burden on my shoulders is heavier…

But for this police dog, things become a little difficult, after all, itself is a dog and it wants to take another dog to work…. on second thought, it takes his “best friend” to the office….

TYDTWDay was first celebrated in 1999. 2018 marks the 20th annual event.

It was created by Pet Sitters International (PSI) to celebrate the great companions dogs make and promote their adoptions. The event encourages employers to experience the joys of pets in the workplace for one day to support their local pet communities. PSI feels that through the events, non-pet owners are able to witness the special bond their co-workers have with their pets firsthand and be encouraged to adopt a new best friend of their own.

Training Your Cat Not to Scratch Furniture

Grinding claws is a part of nature of cats, so it is impossible to stop them. For cats, the claw is its most powerful weapon, so it must always wear away the aging keratin to make it sharp.

In addition, grinding the claws is also used to show their own power and increase the odor. There are scent glands inside the forefoot of cats, so they grind their claws are also to let feet have their own smell.

Despite this, if you let it grind the claw casually, the sofas, curtains, chairs, carpets, wooden floors, walls, etc. of your home will become ragged and terrible. And once the cat has determined where to grind its claws, it can not be changed easily, which will be even more costly.

It is the hardest thing to educate cat to grind the claws in an acceptable place. Therefore, such education should be started as early as possible before the furniture is badly spoiled.

Training should begin from kittens. First, you need prepare a special grinding tool. If the cat begins to grind its claws on the furniture, you should immediately say “no” and bring it to the special plank you prepared before, grasp the cat’s front legs with both hands and place them on a wooden post and simulate the scratching of the cat. So that the exudates of the glands on the cat’s feet can be painted on the wooden posts.

At the beginning, the cat may be disobedient, but after a few moments it will grind its claws patiently. Praise it when it can skillfully grind its claws on the special plank. After several time’s training, coupled with the scent of the secreted fluid, the cat will take the initiative to scratch on the wooden post. Once your cat developing such habits, it will no longer scratch the furniture.

How to Choose Chews for Dogs?

Giving your dog appropriate things to chew on is good for their teeth and gums, keeps them occupied, and decreases the tendency to chew on things they shouldn’t.

A chew toy is a toy designed to be chewed by animals for purposes of stimulation and relief from boredom. The act of gnawing on a chew toy is meant to be soothing and to assist small animals, like puppies, in event of easing the pain when breaking in their adult teeth as the chewing process releases feel-good chemicals from the brain.

Chew toys are a vital part of a happy, healthy animal’s life. In addition to providing hours of entertainment, they also allow the animal to work out anxiety and boredom by being occupied with chewing a toy. Chew toys also distract small animals from chewing on other “forbidden” items, and they assist in maintaining healthy teeth.

But did you know that some chews you can buy for your pet are actually harmful? Unlike-toys for children, there are no rules or regulations regarding toys or treats for pets. Just because you can buy an item in a store does not mean it’s good for your pet. So what should you watch for and what should you avoid?

Toys with small parts that your dog could swallow or choke on are common. Avoid any toy for dogs or cats that has strings, googly eyes, feathers, or any other part that could come off.

Avoid items that are too hard. Biting down just right on an object that is too hard causes a flake of the tooth to shear off. If the tooth breaks such that the tooth root is exposed, the tooth will be very painful and will subsequently become infected. Because this usually happens to the large back premolar that is difficult to see, your dog may be in pain for many months before you even know there is a problem.

You can give your dog bones to chew on but only if they are not poultry bones. Do not give your dog chicken bones since they are prone to splintering. Splintered bones are a danger since they can puncture our dog’s stomach or intestines and put his life at risk. The safest way is buy chew toys for your dogs.

Beef bones are only safe if they are boiled and softened. Raw meat or bones are not safe for dogs or people. Not only can uncooked bones break teeth but they can also give your dog Salmonella, Toxoplasmosis, E. coli or other food poisoning. Chicken, turkey or other small bones can splinter and cause punctures in the mouth, esophagus or intestines, so there also should never be fed to pets.

Pieces of rope with a knot at each end are popular now. These are a good choice as they are soft and gentle on teeth and gums. Throw them away when they start to unravel. Soft plush toys usually don’t last long, and if the stuffing is swallowed it can cause an intestinal blockage. Take these away as soon as they start to come apart, which in large dogs may be in a matter of minutes.

Whatever toys you choose, use common sense and look for tough, long-lasting and durable choices. If your dog likes what you’ve chosen, he’ll be sure to put it to the test.
